The year was 1776. A Scotsman named Adam Smith published his book An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. He espoused the importance of freedom and the power of economic freedom.
Smith felt the freedom to compete was vital to the survival of any economy. He believed that people would work hard if they knew they would be rewarded for doing so. He made the desire for money (capital) the foundation of his theory. According to Smith, as long as farmers, laborers, and businesspeople could see economic reward for their efforts, they would work long hours. As a result of these efforts, the economy would prosper with plenty of food to eat and products of all, kinds available to buy. Like an invisible hand, as people try to improve their own situation in life, the economy grows and prospers through the production of needed goods, services, and ideas. The invisible hand turns self-directed gain into social and economic benefits.
The name used to describe Smith´s powerful economic system, based on economic freedom and incentives, was capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system in which all or most of the means of production and distribution (for example, land, factories, railroads, and stores) are privately owned and operated for profit. Distribution of wealth is done by the workings of the market.
